MULTI-FRAME project partners worked on mapping the diversity of multi-use worldwide

Untitled design 59

MULTI-FRAME project partners worked on mapping the diversity of multi-use around the world by examining 23 existing pilot cases. This exploratory database aims at listing marine uses cases worlwide to define multi-use globally, identify stakeholders to work with and feed the future Blueprint of multi-use solutions.

A first version of Multi-Frame’s ocean multi-use database was delivered in late January 2021. This exploratory database aims at listing marine uses cases all around the world to define multi-use globally, identify stakeholders to work with and feed the future Blueprint of multi-use solutions. To date, 23 implemented and pilot cases were identified, described and documented. Mixes of marine uses are very diverse with regards to the nature and the number of activities involved, as well as the way theses activities are combined. The database includes a wide array of situations ranging from subsequent marine uses, like repurposed oil and gas facilities, to integrated marine uses such as aquaculture within offshore wind farms. However, this apparent diversity hides geographical patterns. In Europe, multi-use cases are generally constituted of two uses, mainly related to marine renewable energies and aquaculture in the North-West seas and to fishing and tourism in the Mediterranean Sea. Outside Europe, they include more activities, even though conservation and tourism are, like in the Mediterranean, driving forces. Multi-Frame’s database will be regularly updated in order to further and better embrace multi-use diversity in the world.
