Mehrfachnutzung in der deutschen AWZ – Gesamtstudie 2024–2025

Diese Studie untersucht die systematische Mehrfachnutzung mariner Flächen in der deutschen ausschließlichen Wirtschaftszone (AWZ) in Nord- und Ostsee.
Im Auftrag des Bundesamtes für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH) wurden rechtliche, planerische, technische und sektorübergreifende Rahmenbedingungen analysiert, um realistische und umsetzbare Mehrfachnutzungskonzepte zu entwickeln.

Im Mittelpunkt stehen insbesondere Kombinationen von Offshore-Windenergie mit Aquakultur, Fischerei, Naturwiederherstellung und Forschung.

Ocean Multi-use in the German EEZ – Comprehensive Study 2024–2025

This study examines the systematic multi-use of marine areas in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the North Sea and Baltic Sea.

Commissioned by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB), the study analyses legal, spatial planning, technical and cross-sectoral framework conditions in order to develop realistic and implementable multi-use concepts.

The focus lies in particular on combinations of offshore wind energy with aquaculture, fisheries, nature restoration and research.

Gutachten zur Mehrfachnutzung von Flächen in der deutschen AWZ der Nordsee und Ostsee

Das vollständige Gutachten, beauftragt vom Bundesamt für Seeschiffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH) und erstellt durch s.Pro – sustainable projects GmbH, Ramboll Deutschland und das FuE-Zentrum der Fachhochschule Kiel GmbH, untersucht die Möglichkeiten einer mehrfachen Nutzung maritimer Flächen in der deutschen AWZ.

Der Bericht zeigt, wie Offshore-Windparks mit weiteren Nutzungen wie Aquakultur, passiver Fischerei, ökologischer Wiederherstellung und Forschung kombiniert werden können, und gibt Empfehlungen für rechtliche, technische und planerische Rahmenbedingungen.

Study on Ocean Multi-use in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the North and Baltic Sea

This summary report in English presents the key findings of a comprehensive study commissioned by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB).
Developed by s.Pro – sustainable projects GmbH (lead), together with Ramboll Germany and the Research and Development Centre at Kiel University of Applied Sciences, the study explores how marine space in the German EEZ can be used more efficiently through multi-use concepts.

It focuses on combining offshore wind farms with additional uses such as aquaculture, passive fisheries, ecological restoration and research, outlining technical, legal and spatial planning conditions for their integration.
The report supports future policy development and planning frameworks for sustainable, multi-purpose use of ocean space in the North and Baltic Seas.

The BlueActionBANOS Project Has Kicked Off

The BlueActionBANOS (BAB) project officially launched on September 1st!

Supported by a consortium of 19 partners, BAB will provide targeted financial assistance, technical guidance, and strategic knowledge-sharing to support the scale-up and deployment of solutions piloted in the early stages of Mission Ocean within the Baltic and North Sea Lighthouse Area. This support will take the form of 5 Community-Led pilot Actions, ranging from EUR 200,000 to EUR 2 million, 20 projects to develop Transition Agendas, with grants of up to EUR 100,000 each, as well as tailored Technical Assistance, leveraging the collective expertise of the consortium and drawing on best practices and advances from the Mission Ocean ecosystem. Throughout the four years, the project will strive to engage blue economy stakeholders and their communities across the Baltic and North Sea. It will equip them with the tools and resources needed to address complex environmental challenges and drive sustainable transformation at local, regional, and national levels.

EU4Algae: Verification of Sustainable Microalgae & Seaweed Products with High Market Potential and Available Criteria & Tools Assessing their Environmental Performance

This study aims to verify sustainable algae products, both microalgae and seaweed, with high potential for market uptake by industry and consumers. The main findings are that 1) algae are a very diverse group of organisms, estimated to be between 30,000 and 1,000,000 species, with only a few species in the market; 2) most algae markets are still pre-mature, where consumers cannot distinguish between European vs. Asian products, and often cannot access algae products; 3) information on market prospects e.g. to 2030, especially for microalgae products, are largely unavailable; and 4) algae production and consumption amounts, at species level, are not readily available. As a result, we identified substantial knowledge gaps.

EU4Algae: Developing a Monitoring Framework to Assess Bioremediation Offered by Algae in Europe

In 2022, the EU Algae Initiative communication announced 23 actions to support the growth of a sustainable, resilient European algae industry. A handful of actions, including Action 8, aim to work with the algae industry and Member States to consider the development of monitoring methodologies and indicators to measure the environmental impact and sustainability of seaweed cultivation. This study addresses knowledge gaps and develops recommendations for a monitoring framework, targets, and methodologies for quantifying algae’s bioremediation ecosystem-service potential regarding carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen uptake.
