ABOUT THE PROJECT

Multiplying feasible microalgae-derived products at scale

The MULTIPLY project aims to prove the sustainable and economically viable cultivation of microalgae, coupled with efficient biorefinery processes across Europe. The project explores the cultivation and application of several microalgae species—such as Spirulina, Nannochloropsis, and Tetraselmis—for use in diverse sectors including food, feed, cosmetics, biomaterials, and lubricants.

By testing and optimizing these systems in both Southern (e.g. Spain, Italy) and Northern (e.g. Denmark, Norway) European environments, MULTIPLY intends to:

· Reduce production costs and resource use

· Increase productivity and circularity

· Develop 10 algae-based, mid-price market-ready products

· Improve environmental and economic sustainability

· Promote public acceptance and market readiness

]]> In this course, the students learn about the nitrogen cycle, Liebig’s law of the Minimum and the importance of nitrogen leaching from agriculture for the marine and coastal ecosystems. In the experimental part of the course, the students work with the scientific method in the form of empirical work with experiments, data processing, sharing of data and scientific modelling. Line mussels are used here as an example of how biological and biotechnological knowledge can contribute to meeting some of the challenges the world is facing, and which have formed the basis for the creation of the UN’s 17 Global Goals. Duration The course covers a total of 10 modules, but individual modules can also be used separately.

]]> In this course, the students learn about the importance of biodiversity, as part of focus on Ecology. The course covers a total of five modules, focused Arctic ecosystems. Individual modules can also be used separately. Theoretical work is done with tasks that support the understanding of the methods used to assess how well an ecosystem are functioning. Tasks assessing how threatened specific species are, using data from international organizations such as the IUCN.

Students learn that bioinformatics is an important tool for conserving species in local environments. Through core academic goals such as biodiversity, DNA sequencing and bioinformatics, students will see an example of how these techniques can help advise the industry to start a sustainable production of oysters in a Danish Fjord. The course covers a total of five modules, but individual modules can also be used separately.

]]> In this project, the students learn about the biological macromolecules and the consequences of their discharge into the world’s oceans. The project is based on research tracking dissolved terrestrial material and darkening of the world’s oceans, with a particular focus on the Arctic Ocean. The course focuses on organic molecules and their colors in the visible spectrum and a little on the absorption of light in the UV range, including Lambert-Beer’s law. In this project, the students must take on the role of the journalist, who tries to familiarize himself with this issue through research in chemistry and then convey the knowledge found. This illustrates to the students how their chemical understanding makes it possible to understand key challenges related to climate change, and that there is a need for action in relation to the UN’s global goals.

]]> In the course, the students primarily learn about proteins, how they are built up from amino acids, and how their solubility and other properties can be manipulated by changing pH and temperature. In continuation of this, enzymes are briefly introduced. The course focuses on the sustainability of different protein sources in food and specifically examines how insects can be used to create more sustainable protein-rich foods, either secondarily as fish feed or directly. As an example, the challenges of feeding the world’s population with fish reared sustainably in aquaculture are used, illustrated through the work of PhD student.

]]> In the course, the students learn about the structure of amino acids and proteins as well as their physical and chemical properties. By utilizing both physical and chemical properties, work is carried out experimentally and theoretically with tasks that support the understanding of the methods used for both the production of protein rich material and the analysis of protein content. Through this, the aim is for the students to gain a deeper understanding of the structure of proteins, acid-base properties and solubility ratios, as well as increase their skills in the laboratory As an example, the challenges of making “cascade utilization” of residual materials such as e.g. mask from beer production illustrated through PhD student work.

]]> In this project, the students learn about how scientists use knowledge of cell respiration, membrane transport and physiology to construct experiments that will contribute information that must be used to ensure sustainable management of marine ecosystems. As an example, the black-mouthed goby is used, which is invasive in a large number of countries including Denmark. The process reflects the research that DTU Aqua has carried out over several years to understand the extent of the problem with this fish, as well as its potential for spread. In the course, the students must thus process, analyze and discuss real data from experiments and studies in order to finally be able to assess how bad this threat to Denmark’s biodiversity is. The theory behind the experiment is primarily related to cell biology and physiology and therefore demonstrates the connection between the different sub-areas of the subject.
