Blue Bioeconomy Conference in Malmö

Sweden as the leader of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2018 organized a conference about the Blue Bioeconomy to continue and strengthen the cooperation of the Nordics in this field.

Submariner Network attended the 2-days conference in South Sweden on 29-30 May 2018. The conference focused on blue products and services developed in a sustainable way and one of the new aspects discussed was the impact of digitalization in the blue bioeconomy. Digitalization can contribute successfully to development of the blue bioeconomy for example among the fish industry. The Swedish company iFiske, for example, is offering a digital licensing system for fishing permits and thanks to the developed software, the provided service is very appreciated among anglers who fish in Swedish waters.

The speakers and the participants of the conference represented companies, research institutions and public authorities. The conference included presentations, panel discussions and the workshop part. Most of the speakers and participants of the conference came from the Nordic countries as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Faroe Islands. The Nordics believe that the sectors with the highest growth potential in the blue bioeconomy are:

  • health sector
  • marine food
  • fishery
  • marine aquaculture (e.g. mussels industry)

Another interesting example for products from the Nordics is the Shisa brand (https://www.shisabrand.com/) from Faroe Islands. Shisa brand represents handmade slow fashion (unique Faroese handiwork) and promotes clothes and accessories made from seaweed and fish skin. The designer Sissal Kristiansen won the first Blue Fashion Challenge in 2017 with the fish leather smock and travel bag and the seal inspired seaweed fabric dress. 

The conference ended up with presentation of numerous potentials offered by the blue /green bio-refinery concepts that reduce dependency on fossil resources and improve re-circulation of micro nutrients.

 

Sweden and Finland are good in forestry, Norway and West Nordics are good in fisheries, while Denmark is strong in agriculture and aquaculture. Diversity and an expertise mix is key for leading to a strong positioning of the region in blue/green bioeconomy. At SUBMARINER we are seeing Nordic collaboration as an example and we are looking into ways to enhance transnational synergies and create opportunities that will advance blue bioeconomy in the Baltic Sea Region.
