In this project, the students learn about how scientists use knowledge of cell respiration, membrane transport and physiology to construct experiments that will contribute information that must be used to ensure sustainable management of marine ecosystems. As an example, the black-mouthed goby is used, which is invasive in a large number of countries including Denmark. The process reflects the research that DTU Aqua has carried out over several years to understand the extent of the problem with this fish, as well as its potential for spread. In the course, the students must thus process, analyze and discuss real data from experiments and studies in order to finally be able to assess how bad this threat to Denmark’s biodiversity is. The theory behind the experiment is primarily related to cell biology and physiology and therefore demonstrates the connection between the different sub-areas of the subject.

The Blue Bio Clusters Interactive Visual Value Chain Facilitation Tool transforms the complexity of blue bioeconomy value chains into interactive, easy-to-understand visual formats. With the aid of six biomass boards and comprehensive identification boards, stakeholders can dive deep into the nuances of value chain analysis, identification, and optimization. With a suite of five modules ranging from quizzes to detailed impact analysis, the tool can be used in a variety of workshop scenarios allowing participants to engage in a dynamic exploration of economic, ecological, social, and technological factors shaping the future of the blue bioeconomy.

“All citizens are directly or indirectly connected to the marine environment. Ensuring that everyone gains a better understanding of the importance of the oceans, the human-ocean interactions, and opportunities to act sustainably and reduce human impacts on marine ecosystem is central to global Ocean Literacy. The Ocean Literacy movement, initiated over 25 years ago in the USA, has received increasing attention world-wide, particularly in Europe, where significant funding had propelled the movement forward. Ocean Literacy is a challenge for all parts of society: educators and trainers, children and professionals, civil society and scientists, consumers and policy/decision makers.”

This book provides an original review of Ocean Literacy as a component of public policy in Europe and beyond. The impact of the ocean on human activities is one of the most significant environmental issues facing humanity. By offering valuable insights into the interrelationships between geography, environment, marine science and education, the book explores key issues relating to the future of our planet and the way people respond to them. This volume discusses concepts concerning citizenship education and co-creation and the role of public policy and different international initiatives in raising awareness and mitigating the effects of over-use and misuse of valuable resources. A range of innovative projects are presented and evaluated from the local to national and global levels. This book advances knowledge and provides a picture of these advances, presents the issues and challenges, including the important role that geography education and geographical awareness could play inadvancing the case for Ocean Literacy.

This crossdisciplinary book appeals to students and scientists as well as professionals and practitioners in geography, environmental and marine sciences, international policy and many related fields.

Exemplary Practices in Marine Science Education is the premier book dedicated exclusively to marine science education and improving ocean literacy, aiming to showcase exemplary practices in marine science education and educational research in this field on a global scale. It informs, inspires, and provides an intellectual forum for practitioners and researchers in this particular context. Subject areas include sections on marine science education in formal, informal and community settings. This book will be useful to marine science education practitioners (e.g. formal and informal educators) and researchers (both education and science).

In this course, students can learn about how unexplored our oceans still are today. Understanding our ocean is essential to our future, yet ocean depths are still 95% unexplored. We know more about space than we do about the ocean.
