The event highlighted the latest developments and potentials in the blue bioeconomy. It also offered an opportunity to identify and discuss policy and regulatory solutions essential for fully unlocking the potential of Europe’s blue bioeconomy by making the aquaculture and fisheries value chains more circular.

The aim was to provide clear policy and regulatory recommendations on the following issues:  

• Authorising algae as an ingredient  
• Valorising aquaculture and fisheries side-streams

Thanks to efforts of the Commission (JRC, SANTE, MARE) and EU Member States’ health authorities the EU novel food catalogue has been supplemented by a good number of new algae species in February 2024. With these changes, several types of algae are now more easily accessible for marketing and inclusion in new products. #
