THE STATE OF OUR MARINE ENVIRONMENT
A one-of-a-kind ecosystem, facing immense challenges
We are living on a blue planet. The ocean and seas cover more than 70% of the planet’s surface and marine environments are home to 80% of all life on earth. The ocean regulates our climate, is a cornerstone to much of the world’s economy, and provides us with resources from food to the oxygen we breathe. Despite its importance, the ocean and seas are facing mounting pressures because of human activity – from warming sea temperatures to pollution. A fundamental shift in how we use and relate to our marine environments is needed to save them. The sustainable blue economy is our solution!
Global issues, local challenges
Five challenges facing our marine environment:
The Baltic Sea: A unique marine environment
The Baltic Sea is a stunning and ecologically significant body of water located in Northern Europe. Surrounded by nine countries – Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Denmark, and Germany. As the world’s youngest sea, the Baltic is relatively shallow and nearly completely enclosed by land, making it especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change and other human-induced environmental challenges. The SUBMARINER Network is addressing these challenges in the Baltic Sea through innovative methods rooted in the sustainable blue economy.
Complex problems require innovative solutions
The sustainable blue economy is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and improved livelihoods, while preserving the health of the ocean ecosystem. The sustainable blue economy is a solution for the future. Our solutions for the Baltic Sea and beyond cover nine areas
