YOUR GUIDE TO THE BLUE ECONOMY

The SUBMARINER Network

The SUBMARINER Network brings together actors from the Baltic Sea Region and beyond to promote innovative and sustainable uses of marine resources to protect our marine environment and promote sustainable economic development. The Network connects research and education institutions, business support organisations, authorities, private companies, and civil society to integrate local perspectives into transnational frameworks. As a flagship network under the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) and the coordinator of the Horizon CSA Blue Mission BANOS, we represent the blue economy at a trans-regional level. The SUBMARINER Network is a registered not-for-profit European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG).

How it all began

In 2013, after the completion of the SUBMARINER project, eight institutions came together and founded the SUBMARINER Network for Blue Growth with the aim of promoting innovative approaches for the sustainable use of marine resources. The eight founding members, who represented public administrations, NGOs, research institutions, and business, recognised a need for a regional network to tackle the challenges facing the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea, like all oceans and seas, is governed by no single entity and faces global challenges, which cannot be solved by any one country or institution on its own. Over the last decade, the SUBMARINER Network has developed into the leading transnational hub in the Baltic Sea for promoting sustainable and innovative uses of marine resources counting more than 50 institutions among its members.

Rooted in the Baltic Sea, thinking globally

While our roots lie in the Baltic Sea Region, the SUBMARINER Network (Sustainable Use of Baltic MARINE Resources) reaches beyond its geographical base to engage in partnerships with actors that share its thematic vision across Europe, and the world. As such, we function as the bridge between the Baltic Sea Region and the rest of the EU.

How we work

The SUBMARINER Network coordinates and participates in sustainable blue economy projects funded by institutions such as the European Union and National Authorities. Our projects rely on transnational partnerships for their success.

Our values

Sustainable impact

We strive to make a lasting impact with our work. We do this by designing and identifying high impact projects and interventions that move the blue economy forward.

Trust-based collaboration

Collaboration is the basis of our work. We strive to be a valued partner for both funding bodies and our members and continually work to promote joint action, by connecting people and institutions.

High quality work

We strive for excellence in everything we do. We hold ourselves to high standards and aim to be at the top of our field. This is accomplished by allowing space for creativity, embracing innovation, and by having a high attention to detail.

Growth mindset

We employ a hands-on mentality. This means that we do not hesitate to act, try new things, and make mistakes. We jump headfirst into new opportunities and remain practical in implementation.
